On Connectedness of a Two-way Elimination of Heterogeneity Design

For some subclass of a two-way elimination of heterogeneity design, necessary and sufficient conditions are established for row-connectedness and column-connectedness of a design to imply its connectedness.     

Statistical Evaluation of the Effect of Gemfibrosil,a Cholesterol Reducing Drug,on Some Biochemical Coronary Heart Disease Risk Variables

The evaluation is based on the clinic trial with gemfibrosil (“Gevilon”, Parke-Davis) carried out in a group of 48 patients, to whom the drug was administered in the single dose of 900 mg daily during the period of 3 months. In this paper we show the results of the treatment on five biochemical Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) risk variables: Cholesterol (CHOL), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Triglyccrides (TGL), Uric Acid (UA) and Glucose (GL). We are concerned with a statistical model allowing to predict which and how large changes in the considered variable can be expected in a patient taking the drug. This is done considering the “regression to the mean” effect.     

荒漠灌丛土壤动物分布及其生态功能

在干旱、半干旱荒漠生态系统中,灌丛作为一种重要的植被类型,其独特的形态和生理适应特性能够有效促进退化生态系统结构与功能的恢复。土壤动物是荒漠生态系统中不可或缺的重要组成部分,对促进灌丛"肥岛"演变具有重要的生态作用,有利于灌丛生态功能的发挥及退化生态系统的恢复。近年来,国内外学者对荒漠灌丛微生境土壤动物的研究逐步深入,取得大量的研究成果。在此基础上,首先综述荒漠灌丛微生境土壤动物群落分布和生态功能,总结灌丛与土壤动物分布间作用关系的数学模型,针对荒漠灌丛土壤动物研究中存在的问题提出了未来可能的研究方向和建议。     

Saldanha Bay,South Africa: recovery of Gracilaria verrucosa (Gracilariales,Rhodophyta)

Since World War II the greater Saldanha Bay lagoon system, South Africa, has been an important Gracilaria producer. Two agar factories, built in the 1960's, used Gracilaria from Saldanha Bay as their raw material. In the early 1970's the industry was destroyed as a result of dredging and marine construction operations to establish a harbor in the bay for loading ore. These environmental changes destroyed stocks and prevented the previously significant beachings of the seaweed from occurring. After a few years of no or very low commercial production, the resource slowly started to recover. The size of Gracilaria drifts increased over the following eight years to approximately one-third of the original output. This trend seems to continue. Although the stocks and resultant drifts are unlikely to recover fully to their original quantity, current production is already sufficient to ensure re-establishment of a seaweed industry in Saldanha Bay. This could have considerable socio-economic impact on the area.     

The energetics of middle-distance running

In order to assess the relative contribution of aerobic processes to running velocity (v), 27 male athletes were selected on the basis of their middle-distance performances over 800, 1500, 3000 or 5000 m, during the 1987 track season. To be selected for study, the average running velocity (v) corresponding to their performances had to be superior to 90% of the best French v of the season. Maximum O2 consumption (VO2max) and energy cost of running (C) had been measured within the 2 months preceding the track season, which, together with oxygen consumption at rest (VO2rest) allowed us to calculate the maximal v that could be sustained under aerobic conditions: vamax = (VO2max - VO2rest) x C-1. The treadmill running v corresponding to a blood lactate of 4 mmol.l-1 (vla4), was also calculated. In the whole group, C was significantly related to height (r = -0.43; P less than 0.03). Neither C nor VO2max (with, in this case, the exception of the 3000 m athletes) were correlated to v. On the other hand, vamax was significantly correlated to v over distances longer than 800 m. These v were also correlated to vla4. However vla4 occurred at 87.5% SD 3.3% of vamax, this relationship was interpreted as being an expression of the correlation between vamax and v. Calculation of vamax provided a useful means of analysing the performances. At the level of achievement studied, v sustained over 3000 m corresponded to vamax.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Alteration of division polarity and preprophase band orientation in stomatogenesis by light

We have developed an experimental system in which the irradiation with a red light pulse induces stomatal disorientation in the hypocotyl epidermis ofCucumis sativus L. In this system, the orientation of the division plane in guard mother cells was not defined correctly. Preprophase bands formed in these cells but their orientation was abnormal.
